Hermetic Library Newsletter - Issue #28 (hoodtwinks and cameltoe)
By John Bell the Librarian • Issue #48 • View online
This week I’ve got a goofy Doctor Who vs “hoodtwinks” and “cameltoe” meme, things fall apart and life will kill you, cool new merch design refresh, typos, magick with a K, Ko-fi and Gumroad, special offer collaborations, the new Atshamé magical weapon, astronomical Lughnasadh, Liber GPT vel DEMIURGE sub figurâ 3, updates, quotes, reviews, and more!
And, as always, I worked on various other things on website, blog, and more … Enjoy!

Things fall apart and life will kill you
My trusty blender tried to slit my throat this week. No, really!
The attempted murder weapon and the alien-made thing
The attempted murder weapon and the alien-made thing
The broken blade ended up in a smoothie and was in my mouth when I found it. That could have ended up being very bad. Thankfully, I lucked out … this time.
Poor old blender. It’s been with me for, seriously, decades; and I only recently started making smoothies in earnest, so I’ve been really throwing ice cubes at it all of a sudden. Like, pretty much every other day, or more if I’m not feeling like cooking. I’m not surprised it retaliated. Et tu, Osterizer?
Also, the aerator on my kitchen sink shattered in half. Turns out that I have some completely non-standard thread size that no one has. Well, to be fair, the hardware store I went to for a replacement only had one size, and a whole wall of that size; but it wasn’t the size I have. Apparently my old avocado coloured kitchen sink’s faucet was made by aliens. Figures.
In my mouth be the essence … Mug
Refreshed design on mug merch for August
Refreshed design on mug merch for August
This month’s design refresh for Patrons was on mug merch, and here it is! Inspired by the eucharist / communion in the Gnostic Mass, Liber XV, this seemed perfectly fun and good for having on a mug!

“Let the sugar and milk of Earth admonish the water of tea and coffee to bear the wakefulness of the Great Chemical. Caffeine, be thou adored.”
We’re now at the second design in the planned sequence of four. The first design has been retired, so only Patrons that were already earning progress toward it will still get it now, but there’s still a few months left to start progress toward this one, and then, you know, the subsequent ones too, when they get added and this one retires.
As a reminder, here’s the full sequence I have planned. If you want in on this, and other cool perks, merch, and more, whilst helping both myself and Hermetic Library keep at it, consider becoming an ongoing Patron!
Earlier this year, I actually created this design for the mugs first, when I was figuring out all four designs in the sequence. Whereas the others all previously existed as posters, this one did not. So, I took the opportunity to also now set up some Unicursal IN MY MOUTH BE THE ESSENCE … Propaganda Posters from Hermetic Library Office of the Ministry of Information. Since there’s two sides, I created two posters.

Typos
Recently caught myself with an unsaved typo where I wrote “reverences” instead of “references”. Fixed, but … amusing!
Still, not my favourite typo. For some reason, I really actually get a little bit of perverse joy when I try typing “today” and end up with “toady”.
As a tangential aside, I saw “verisimilitude” used in print yesterday, and that’s always fun. Still haven’t ever gotten to see “etaoin shrdlu” in the wild though, but I keep hoping.
Magick with a K
All True Initiates know that modern “magick” is pronounced “made cake” and this is why it is spelled with a k. #InternetFact
The secret is in the sauce. I’d share the gnosis with you but I eated it.
But, seriously, if you’re interested in why “magick” with a K, and want to read something as & with a reference you can point to, consider checking out Tupman’s 2003 dissertation Theatre Magick: Aleister Crowley and the Rites of Eleusis pp25–26.
In particular this cites Book 4, and quotes a footnote, which can be found at the library. The other major quote in that is from Kenneth Grant, Aleister Crowley and the Hidden God, p5.
I mean, there’s other resources and reference, but there’s one. Also, if you didn’t know about the dissertation, there it is! I’ve had it linked as something worth checking out over on the Rites of Eleusis pages for years.
Then, for funsies, whilst checking that out, listen to the track Magick with a K by Scholar on MMR13 and if you ever need to point someone to actual information about this have them gander at the entry for Magick in Hermeneuticon which now has more information on this topic.
Ko-fi and Gumroad
Yeah, idek, but I just set up https://ko-fi.com/hermeticlibrary as an alternative. I’d not bothered for a long time, but it looks like they’re starting to allow more full patronage style profiles instead of just tip jars. I don’t know how fancy I’ll get with it yet, but it exists now.
I mean, I’m also squatting https://hermeticlibrary.gumroad.com because it’s good to have options, though I don’t use it for anything atm.
Over the years I’ve tried out lots of various things to offer ways for people to support the work I do and keep the library online. Sometimes I’ve had lots of options. I’ve also had periods where I’ve had only a few.
Currently, the primary option, in my view, is being a Patron on Patreon. There’s also subscribing on Bandcamp and even newer is the option to become a member of this Newsletter.
I see both Ko-fi and Gumroad as potential options to replace or mirror Patreon. In the past neither had all the features or the right mix of features for how I do things such that they were good options for me; but it looks like they both are starting to get there. What that means is that if Patreon goes down, or becomes too problematic, as a platform, I have somewhere to go.
That’s a big deal, as there are just simply some things about running a subscription patronage campaign that it isn’t easy enough to do on one’s own as a small creator, like myself. It’s unfortunate, but there really is an economy of scale and of reach that a platform like Patreon has going for it.
So, whereas I’m always one to advocate creators having as much control over their content platforms, basically one should preference self-hosting, or using managed services if necessary, as much as possible and not have to rely on any external company’s enclosed platform that is a point of total failure (Because they do fail. Both temporarily and permanently. A lot!), the workable options for self-hosting are abysmal and the options for enclosed platforms on which to run patronage campaigns are very few.
But, this week, I now potentially have two more options, just in case.

Special Offer Collaborations
So I think I have sorted an occult / esoteric fashion special offer collab from Sept–Oct.
I won’t say much more right now, so as not to spoil the surprise. But, basically, this will be like what I’ve done most recently with Century Guild Century Guild and our archival reproduction antique poster special offer collaboration but there’s other examples to see what this might look like.
That means I’m basically set, unless things go awry, through the end of the year, but I’d love to talk about ideas for 2022! Do I know anyone else that would be interested in doing a special offer collab? Or do you have an idea for something else? Get in touch!
Atshamé
Georgina Rose ✶
The truth is, if you don't do your lbrp and read for five minutes a day, I will show up at your apartment, and make you do a ritual at athamepoint. https://t.co/IQ7mpd2QSs
I first read that as “atshamepoint” and now I think that should definitely be a new word, and a new magical weapon. Wait. Is it already?
Atshamé! Atshamé! Atshamé! (I said it three times into the mercury scrying mirror in my best Vax'ildan 🗡🗡🗡 imitation. Did the summoning work?)
Oh. Wait. I practiced a practice.
Curses! Foiled again!

Astronomical Lughnasadh
Observed Lughnasadh or Lammas happened already, on Aug 1st. But whether these or whatever harvest festival you celebrate, I hope you had a good one.
I made this Bind-rune and rhyme for Lugh’s Feast a bunch of years ago.
And there’s a circle casting I used in a public ritual with the community and a subsequently updated rhyme over on my personal blog from that time.
But, don’t forget! Astronomical Lughnasadh, Lammas, &c. happens when ☉ in 15° ♌︎ (Sol is in 15° Leo), and that’s August 7 at 6:53 am UTC in 2021. So you can still keep celebrating!
